“It’s really magical to see the special connection that is created with the children through books. Every week, we laugh, we’re scared, we’re moved, but most of all we have a lot of fun!”
Shamim brought her children to the Fraser Hickson when they were young and it was during these visits that she began to wish she could work at the library. Shamim began volunteering at the Fraser Hickson Institute in 1984 and after two months was hired as a staff member. She worked until the Fraser Hickson closed in 2007 and has volunteered at the locations that the library moved to including its current home at 3755 rue Botrel. We are very grateful for Shamim’s dedication and generosity throughout the years.
What a wonderful holiday party honoring our amazing volunteers and a special thank you to Shamim Khan, our long standing volunteer of 35 years! Thanks to all those who attended. Thank you to our wonderful sponsors, Notre-Boeuf-de-Grace, Sandrini Confections and Première Moisson. We also said goodbye to our lovely librarian, Niusha, and thanked her for her years with . Once again, from all our staff to all our volunteers you are the best! Happy Holidays!
Yesterday, we presented an Early Literacy Workshop for parents at one of our s, PEP (Parents engagés pour la petite enfance)
Our mission to raise literacy levels by empowering partners to instill in children a life-long love of reading and learning from birth, and to enable free access to books and animation services has been a great success this year – 127 programs located in 85 sites!
As Fraser Hickson ventures into its 135th year of existence we invite you to join in our efforts to ensure early literacy development is a top priority in everyone’s ‘books’ in 2020!
‘Increasing literacy skills in the workforce by an average of 1% would, over time, lead to a 5% increase in GDP, or $54 billion per year, every year, and a 5% increase in productivity. (Literacy Lost: Canada’s Basic Skills Shortfall-2018’ Frontier College)
Two of our amazing volunteers, Marlon and Vicki, animated story time at the Jamaica Association of Montreal for their Christmas event this past weekend.
Thanks to Domtar Everyday, First Book Canada, Audrey and our CEO Helen who had the pleasure of delivering books and reading today at the CPE Lieu des petits, installation petite chenilles!
