Volunteer of the month – October 2021

Héloïse Joffreau

We are delighted to highlight Héloïse Joffreau this month for bringing the joy of books and reading to children in our community. Here’s what she has to say:

When I first discovered , I immediately thought to myself this was a great project and I needed to contribute! My volunteer hours quickly became the highlight of my week. The children were so excited to have me read to them and what’s more, one story was never enough! Some days they didn’t even want to let me leave even until I had read them all my books. Another great experience has been my time volunteering in the library. Cataloguing, processing and especially stamping books has been very satisfying and fulfilling. My hours there always go by too fast! In a few words, those moments of reading in the daycares and cataloguing books in the library have been ones of pure happiness. I am glad to be part of and its mission to provide free access to books and to inspire a passion for reading!”

Closing Canada’s literacy gap in a pandemic, Montreal Gazette

Our literacy challenge — particularly the importance of early learning initiatives — should be a national priority, write Celine Cooper and Asha Dixit of the Fraser-Hickson Institute, Montreal Gazette.

“Research suggests the COVID crisis has not only increased inequities in literacy rates but will lead to deficits in student learning.  Closing the literacy gap is both a vital pandemic challenge and a generational opportunity.”
In recognition of International Literacy Day this week, we share this piece by the President of our Board of Governors, Celine Cooper and our ED Asha Dixit, on why all federal leaders should make literacy promotion, especially early learning initiatives, a national priority.
