Book suggestions: World Refugee Day

In honour of International Refugee Day, here are a few recommended reads by our volunteer Wanessa Cardoso.

Did you know that each year on 20 June, the world celebrates World Refugee Day? “The international day to honour people who have been forced to flee. The idea is that together, we can champion their right to seek safety, build support for their economic and social inclusion, and advocate for solutions to their plight”. (Source: UNHCR).

” I am deeply honored and grateful to have had the opportunity to volunteer with MinibiblioPLUS for over a month. Storytime at the local kindergarten has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and assisting the marketing team in the office has been equally fulfilling. I would like to extend my appreciation to the staff for their warm welcome and assistance. Their teamwork and collaborative spirit have made my volunteer experience both enjoyable and educational. Volunteer of the month – May 2023

Volunteer of the Month

Gaelle Paquet

We are delighted to announce our volunteer of the month for May 2023: Gaelle Paquet! Here’s a message from her:

“On my first day volunteering, I was surprised to find that a group of young children could make me so nervous. Though, it only took me a few minutes to realize how wonderful and curious they were. Throughout my volunteering, I have come to think that reading is an integral part of life, full of learning, and fun. So, I believe it is extremely important for kids to develop an interest in reading early on. By exposing them to books in a fun, informal way, the kids I work with have really developed a strong and long-lasting relationship with reading. This is why I think projects like minibiblioPLUS are so necessary.
Besides bringing me lots of fun time reading and playing with kids, my volunteering here has given me a new outlook on the link between education and entertainment. I truly value my work here and I think that seeing the kids’ faces light up each time they see me and the books is one of the most priceless feelings ever.”

Additionally, it has been a hobby of mine for over a year and is something I love doing every week. Ultimately this experience has helped me improve my communication skills and my shy behavior. Thank you very much minibiblioPLUS!”

Volunteer of the month – March 2023

Isabel Meadowcroft

We are delighted to announce our volunteer of the month for March 2023: Isabel Meadowcroft! Here’s a message from her:

“I fondly remember my favourite children’s books – mostly because my dad was an energetic reader who delighted in animating them and because of the enduring lessons I learned from these stories. As a child I learned to read later than my peers, but I believe it was this early connection to literacy that meant I picked it up quickly once I had help, becoming an avid reader. I now take pride in supporting minibiblioPLUS’ mission to develop early literacy skills through instilling in children a lifelong love of reading and learning. I enjoy using puppets, props, and imagination-based games to actively engage the children with the content of the book. I’m delighted when, after story-time, the children initiate play based on the characters and themes from the books. Now, without prompting, the four-year-olds make predictions about what might happen in the story and ask questions about the material during the read-aloud! Most of all, I love it when the children rush to the bookshelves after story-time to pick out their favourite books to read individually. Through volunteering with minibiblioPLUS I’ve witnessed how reading stories aloud to children encourages their problem-solving and creative skills as well as their empathy.”
